Last night was the night that the year 8’s were graduating. It was such a fun night for the year 8’s, all the food, pictures from the past and mostly spending time with our friends. Parents proud, Teachers proud most of all the children being graduated. I hate that we are being separated from each other next year but probably we will be able to see each other next year.

Enlargement
Today we did scale art. As you can see my one is a skull. Steps were involved to this activity. First what I did was I had to choose a picture from google and only then I can do my scale art. Then I drew up my grid of how many squares am I going to have. Next I had to measure the squares of how big it's going to be. Mine was 40 cm long. So 1 cm represents 40 cm. I found this activity really easy because I am good at drawing and have done this before.

As you can see here this is a picture of the enlargement that I did. What I did was a dinosaur. It took a while doing this but to do this was used the grid and copied every bit of the picture. It was actually really easy for me because I have done this before and I am good at drawing. I would want to enlarge a skull.

Tessellation
Today we were learning about Tessellation. Tessellation has got something to do with patterns. There are two rules when it comes to tessellation it is where there are no gaps and no overlaps. There are names that you can call a tessellation. One is a polygon and the other is called a vertex. A polygon is a fully connected shape with no curves. A vertex is the corner of the shapes. I had fun making a tessellation pattern. There are many ways of doing it and mine turned out looking like a star.

Haiku poem
Yesterday Mrs Donaldson was teaching how to do a haiku poem. A haiku poem is different to an original poem. It doesn't have to rhyme and it only has three lines. The first line has 5 syllables, 7 in the middle and 5 in the last line. So the whole class did one and this is mine.

Brooke Neal told us to set some goals that we would want to achieve. Brooke told us a story of when she was young she had set a goal and now that she is older she found that goal and started crying. She was really inspiring and really inspired my of creating my own goals

Basketball
In Basketball we learnt new skills. One of them was to form a diamond with our fingers to have a better grip on the ball so that it doesn't slip through your hands. We revisit some of the passes such as bounce pass, chest pass and practice on it to make our passes more powerful. Another this that we learnt the meaning of beef. B is for balance, E eyes, Elbows and F is for follow up. Another thing that all basketball players need to do is to keep their heads up because they need to see where there opponents are and where they team mates are.

Mathematics at Tamaki college
Today I have learnt many things about algebra such as meaning of an expression and also "maths eyes". Here are one of the examples 2a + 3a2 + 4a . It is really easy and mostly all the year 8s got confused. Here are some other stuff that we have learnt.
Expression
|
Everything together and no equal sign
|
Variable
|
Is just the letter
|
Coefficient
|
It’s the number just before the letter
|
Constant
|
The number all by itself
|
When variables are the we like to call them like terms
When adding like terms keep the variables the same
2a + 5a = 7a
4c + 5c = 9c
7p - 4p = 3p
Ab + 2ab = 3ab
“Maths eyes” if there is no number is front of the letter than that will always be a one.
E.g ab + 2ab
So if the variable is not the same then just forget about it and add the number.
When do an expression the number must be in alphabetical order

Rounding and Compensating
This week, I have been solving maths problems using the rounding and compensating strategy. At first, I didn’t quite recognize this strategy and it took me a while to understand how to use it. I did got the hang of it and used that strategy to solve some of my math problems. Maybe I would have to use this strategy in my tests...never know.

Cook Island Language Week
This week is Cook Island Language week and 3 visitors from the Auckland Museum came to our school to sit with us for an hour. They taught us Cook Island history and culture. When we were with them, I learnt that all pacific island languages for coconut is niu. I also learnt how to use a drill from the olden days and how to put all the pieces together to make a canoe. I also learnt that the string they use is from the husk of the coconut and how the coconut tree is the tree of life.

Everyday theatre
Today, two ladies from everyday theatre came to room 8 and performed a show. We also combined with room 7. I really did enjoy it and also all the games after that. My favourite game was when we had to get into groups and freeze. I think that everyday theatre came to our school to talk to us about some issues with the family and how some parents can be so abusive. I think that there was nothing hard about playing the game and I think that a computer game was used to switch characters. Honestly I would like to play this game again like everyday.

Walt: match metaphors with their meaning in sport and nonsport activities
All of the room 8 students were split into groups of three. I was with Andrea and Stephanie. The game that we had to play was that we had to match the meanings to the metaphors. The writing target group had already played the game. So those who knew how to play the game had to sit aside and watch the others figure out which goes where. It was challenging for those who didn’t know how to play but they did get there in end.

This is a game called alien angles. To play this game you have to find an angle that is given so that we can rescue the alien. To play this game you will need a protractor. When you have found the angle that is given then you probably find an alien and rescue it. I did enjoy playing this game and I will play it again.

Decorating muffins with patterns
In class, we were given a challenge and that challenge was to create the best pattern designs for our muffins. My one turn out to look like a windmill with raisins on top of the kiwi fruit. Everyone trying to keep their fruits in place. Then it was time to judge who's muffin design was the best. Mrs Donaldson had chosen the 5 best designs. It was so hard to choose who's was the best and then Nick came in to choose. The winner was Ketura and she was given some nuts and raisins. Next I want to learn more about algebra.

Lastly, Dreydon and Kate were ready to leave but Mrs Ramkolowan offered to take a picture of the class with Dreydon and Kate. Dreydon inspired me to walk 80km walk or less than that if I had the chance to.
This Tuesday afternoon, Dreydon and Kate visited our class. Dreydon had walked 80 km under 24 hours and raised over $5000. Our school received $4,600 from Dreydon and the team. Dreydon and Kate also shared a presentation with the class.
First, Dreydon and Kate explained what happened on the walk. The thunder and rain was interrupting the walk, but that did stop them. Others on the walk were enjoying the view, the beautiful beaches and sometimes a clear blue sky. Dreydon then showed the equipment that was used on the walk. There was a headtorch, camel pack and a beacon to signal a helicopter if they were lost. Pictures were also brought up of Dreydon and the crew doing the 80 km walk in the dark of the night.
Then Dreydon questioned us if we had a goal but the goal we came up with was about sports camp. He then asked us to get in a group and work out a goal that we can successfully achieve, but the goals we had to set had to be S.M.A.R.T ( Specific, Measureable, Achieved, Relevant, Time bound ).

Maui
Dad, Tiki and Te Paea went fishing in Dad’s secret fishing spot. Then Tiki took out his fishing rod and started to fish. Then with surprise Tiki caught a snapper. Te Paea then changes the bait to a squid. Te Paea then Calls that she could see dolphins. Then Dad calls the department of conservation to tell where they had anchored their boat. Then they felt a little bump and saw a dolphin on the side of the boat with a little scar on the side of his nose. Then Dad, Tiki and Te Paea had lunch and imagined mum giving them sausage rolls, banana cake and mum sitting in her green chair. Tiki then asks, “Why are they called Maui dolphin?”. Then Dad tell them that Maui-tiki is the one who stole stuff from people. Dad didn't really know the full story because it was told differently. So it was time for Dad and the kids to head back home but they stayed for a quick fish. As they were slicing through the waves the little dolphin with the scar then followed them. Dad slowed down and with excitement, the dolphin was heading towards the boat and leaped out of the water, into the air like the dolphin was jumping of the moon. The kahawai was put away and the Dad steered.

I think I did really well I just got 90% in my basic facts. I did struggle a bit because it's being timed. It is hard when the test gives 3 to the power of 4. I didn't have enough time work it out because the test was too fast. What I really want to learn next is how to figure out which fraction is bigger that the other.

The giant walking man
The giant walking man
He now is cautious to not drive with his eyes closed
Walht: write an interesting and enjoyable narrative
Success criteria:
- Plan
- Write the words for the introduction
- Write a powerful introduction
It was such a dull day in New york, John was just heading over to work, at Pizza place. Just as John was texting, he bumped into a scientist “HEY MAN!, watch out.” “I’m so sorry.”John apologized. The man asked “Would you like to be interested on coming over to the science headquarters to learn about what we do and to do some experiments?” John wasn’t even interested on what the man was saying, he just walked away.
After that, Everyone started to evacuate the Pizza place. Black smoke flying into the sky almost camouflaging with the dark, grey clouds in the sky. People inside surrounded by fire nowhere to escape. Firemen on the way. John looked around. People crying for someone to save their beloved ones. He couldn’t stand watching them cry. Fire truck's siren bursting through the streets. Suddenly they showed up, the men in formation holding the hose and ready to put out the fire. John squeezed his hair and dropped to his knees. He knew he was going to get the blame for the lost of those families in the fire. Once that dramatic show was over he then went home and tidy himself up. He was so angry that she started punching the walls and left holes. He then decided to head back into town. Driving so angrily his eyebrows then turned into arrows pointing down diagonally to his nose. As he was driving he then suddenly revisit that memory at the Pizza place and he then crashed into the laboratory up ahead.
Glass smashed everywhere and blood bursting out of John's left leg. John could even move one inch like his body was paralyzed. As John was pluking bits of pieces of glass out of his checks people then started to rush over to see if he was okay. What John didn’t know is that something had injected to body from the laboratory, something that will make him change forever. He then started feeling pain in his stomach like it was ready to erupt like a volcano. He then spewed on the sidewalk and started to change. He was looking at himself, seeing that he was growing and growing into a giant. He was getting scared because he didn’t even know what was happening. “What is happening to me?” he questioned in tears. As he was getting bigger and bigger his clothes were becoming the size of a giant. He then was a giant. People frightened and running for their lives. Cars beeping and crashing into John foot. He then started to run. He didn’t even know which way to go. Buildings Crashing and running through New York like he was in a maze. And he then started to head for the mountains.
When he hid behind the mountains he looked at himself, What could of done this?. He kept hiding from people and yet the whole of the army showed up. Scientists, looking for a cure to fix him fix him. Soldiers fighting off John with missiles and cannibals. “IT WAS A COMPLETE SUCCESS!” one of the scientist shouted in cheers. He had finally found a cure to shrink John back to original size. Then he called them about the cure. “ Here shoot it into his leg, it will inject into his body and shrink him back. Then one of the soldiers started to aim at his leg. “SHOOT!”. Flying through the air, cutting through the wind and aim right at him left foot. As he was shrinking down, the people shouted in cheers. Now John is back to his original size.
Then John was taken back to New York fine and perfectly secured. John’s leg was so bruised, he couldn’t even move knees.
